Kevin Sumlin, a former Texas A&M head coach and current co-offensive coordinator at Maryland, was arrested in Florida on Saturday and charged with driving under the influence, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Sumlin was arrested just before 1 a.m. Saturday in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa. Details of his arrest are not yet known, although there was no evidence of an accident or damage and he reportedly refused a breathalyzer test at the scene.
Sumlin, 59, was later released on bail.
Sumlin is best known for his career at Texas A&M, where he coached from 2012 to 2017. He landed in College Station when Texas A&M joined the SEC. Aggies quarterback Johnny Manziel won the Heisman Trophy during Sumlin’s first season with the program, and the Aggies went 11-2 and won the Cotton Bowl.
He compiled a 51-26 record with the Aggies but was fired after the 2017 campaign. He was hired by Arizona a year later, lasted just three seasons and won just nine games there. Sumlin went 35-17 during his four seasons with Houston before joining Texas A&M, including a 12-1 run in 2011.
Sumlin returned to college football this past offseason after a stint as head coach and general manager of the USFL’s Houston Gamblers. He was hired as the Terrapins’ associate head coach, co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach.
Maryland plays Northwestern on Saturday. The Terrapins, who have lost two straight games, have a 5-2 record and are in contention for their third straight winning season, something the program hasn’t seen since 2003.
