Giannis Antetokounmpo’s extension quashes unlikely Knicks dream

The New York Knicks have been rumored to be making big moves in the upcoming NBA offseason, with one of their reported targets being Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, any hope of seeing “The Greek Freak” in a Knicks jersey has been effectively quashed with his recent contract extension.

Antetokounmpo, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2021, signed a five-year, $228 million supermax contract with the Bucks. This massive extension not only secures his future in Milwaukee but also effectively shuts down any speculation of him joining the Knicks or any other team for the foreseeable future.

For Knicks fans who had been dreaming of Antetokounmpo transforming their struggling franchise into a contender, this news is undoubtedly disappointing. The 26-year-old forward has established himself as one of the league’s most dominant players, winning two consecutive NBA MVP awards and leading the Bucks to the best regular-season record in the league in recent years. His athleticism, versatility, and ability to impact the game on both ends of the court make him a coveted asset for any team.

Furthermore, Antetokounmpo’s decision to stay in Milwaukee demonstrates his loyalty to the organization that drafted him back in 2013. It also speaks volumes about the Bucks’ ability to build a competitive team around him, making them an attractive destination for superstar players.

While the Knicks’ dream of landing Antetokounmpo may be over, it’s important for the franchise and their fans to regroup and focus on other potential moves that can help improve the team. With new management in place and a promising young core led by RJ Barrett and Mitchell Robinson, the Knicks are slowly but steadily moving in the right direction.

Ultimately, while the Antetokounmpo dream is now put to rest, there is still hope for the future of the New York Knicks. It’s time to shift their attention to other available free agents and building a competitive team that can contend in the Eastern Conference.

N.B.A

You can forget that improbable dream of The Greek Freak’s Knicks landing.

After all the talk this summer by Giannis Antetokounmpo about potentially delaying signing an extension, he signed a three-year, $186 million deal with the Bucks on Monday, ESPN reported.

The deal included a third-year player option.

The 28-year-old Antetokounmpo was initially set to hit the open market in the summer of 2025 if he declined his player option, but after the Bucks landed the blockbuster Damian Lillard deal, Antetokounmpo changed his mind.

And so the Knicks will have to look elsewhere for the game-changing superstar to work with Jalen Brunson.

They have been monitoring the Timberwolves’ Karl-Anthony Towns, the Cavaliers’ Donovan Mitchell and the 76ers’ Joel Embiid, The Post’s Stefan Bondy previously reported.

Mitchell, a 27-year-old native of Elmsford, New York, will become a free agent in the summer of 2025 if he declines his player option and has said he would not sign an extension before this season.

The Knicks tried to trade for him two seasons ago, but the Jazz ultimately sent Mitchell to Cleveland.

Embiid, the reigning MVP, has three years left on his contract, though the situation in Philadelphia, with a disgruntled James Harden wanting out and skipping most of training camp, warrants oversight.

Leon Rose and the Knicks will have to pursue another superstar after Giannis Antetokounmpo secured an extension with the Bucks.

Then there’s Towns, a New Jersey native who was once represented by team president Leon Rose.

His name has been involved in trade rumors for quite some time now.
